The FDFMerge Products
(FDFMerge and FDFMerge Lite)
The FDFMerge products allow a programmer to
create a hands-off production workflow that
creates PDF documents by populating PDF forms
dynamically with text, JPEG images, and/or individual PDF pages
and storing the completed files on a server. These
products allow a programmer to develop a
bulletproof, worry-free PDF-merging/-stamping solution
that is designed to handle the high volume,
on-demand production needs of today's
electronic-publishing industries.

Adobe Acrobat not required
The FDFMerge products are stand-alone applications — you don't
need to have Adobe Acrobat installed to use them.

|
There are two different
FDFMerge products available:
- FDFMerge — This is a
command-line application that lets you
merge or stamp text, JPEG images, and/or individual
PDF pages into fields on a PDF form
and save the resulting file on a server.
Optionally, you can also linearize
the resulting file and/or encrypt it. (Linearizing a PDF file
optimizes it for fast Web viewing.)
- FDFMerge Lite — This is a
less-expensive version of FDFMerge. It is
a command-line application that lets
you merge text into fields on a PDF form,
optionally linearize
and/or encrypt the output, and
save the resulting file on a server.
Both FDFMerge and FDFMerge Lite allow you to do other tasks
as well. See below for details.
The command-line interface is simple yet powerful. A
command-line statement can be invoked in many different
environments, with many different

If you want to utilize the
functionality of FDFMerge or FDFMerge Lite in a services-based
architecture (for example, as a Web service), you should consider using
APConductor in conjunction
with FDFMerge or FDFMerge Lite.
Here are the details about both products.
FDFMerge
As explained above, FDFMerge can be used by a programmer
to populate form fields on a PDF form
with:
The following form-field types are supported:
- buttons
- check boxes
- combo boxes
- list boxes
- radio buttons
- single-line and multi-line text fields.
In addition to populating form fields,
FDFMerge can do various other things. Here
is a list of features:
- You can control the following form-field parameters:
font,
font size (including fractional point sizes),
character spacing,
word spacing,
x- and y-scaling for fonts,
line spacing (leading),
foreground and background colors,
border attributes,
more.
- Form fields can be flattened;
this allows
the data in the form field to become an integral part of the
document, and the form field itself is
not included in the document. (In other words, that particular area of the
document no longer behaves like a form field — it simply displays
the text or graphic that was inserted into the form field.)
You can even flatten some form fields
and not others (essentially stamping some form fields and merging others).
- Cropping.
- Kid extensions are supported in form-field names.
- PDF File Encryption — you can
add Acrobat standard security to the
files that you generate with FDFMerge
by encrypting your PDF documents with
either 40-bit or
128-bit strength.
FDFMerge supports all standard Acrobat
security features: "Do not allow printing,"
"Do not allow modifying the document,"
"Do not allow selecting text and graphics,"
"Do not allow adding or changing notes and form fields,"
"Do not allow fill or sign of form fields,"
"Do not allow accessibility,"
"Do not allow document assembly,"
"Do not allow high-resolution printing."
You can set a user password for opening the
document. You can set an owner password
for changing permissions and passwords.
- Supports linearized output files.
- Thread safe.

The main differences between FDFMerge Lite and FDFMerge
are:
- FDFMerge Lite cannot populate PDF form fields with
JPEG images or PDF pages.
- FDFMerge Lite does not allow the programmer to
have as much control over colors and typography as FDFMerge does.
