Citation Software News
September 5, 2007
|
Welcome to the September 5, 2007 issue
of Citation Software News!
|
In this issue we're focusing on the following topics:
|
Adobe says it will remove the "Send to FedEx Kinko's" feature from Adobe Acrobat & Adobe Reader
Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced that it will remove the "Send to FedEx Kinko's"
service & functionality from Adobe Reader & Adobe Acrobat.
According to an August 1st press release from Adobe, the versions
of Adobe Reader & Acrobat that are scheduled for release in
October 2007 will not contain the feature.
This announcement from Adobe comes in the wake of a major uproar
that has been rippling through the printing industry for the past
few months, ever since Adobe's June release of Versions 8.1 of
Adobe Reader & Acrobat. These versions of the Reader & Acrobat
software contain a menu item on the File menu that makes it very
easy for the user to transmit a PDF file to a FedEx Kinko's facility
and place an order for the file to be printed by FedEx Kinko's.
Immediately after Adobe Reader 8.1 and Adobe Acrobat 8.1 were released
on June 6th, printing-industry executives began putting strong pressure
on Adobe to remove the feature from Reader & Acrobat, claiming
that it gives an unfair advantage to FedEx Kinko's. Discussions
about the controversial "Send to FedEx Kinko's" feature
raged for several weeks on print-industry blogs, forums, and
discussion lists; and some of the discussions are still active as
of this writing.
The uproar culminated in a San Francisco meeting near the end of July.
According to several sources, at this meeting high-level representatives
from major print franchises and from print-industry organizations
told Adobe representatives that the Adobe-FedEx Kinko's deal
was absolutely unacceptable, and they insisted that Adobe remove
the "Send to FedEx Kinko's" feature from Reader & Acrobat
immediately.

New versions of two variable-data-printing solutions (DesignMerge Pro and PrintShop Mail) have been released
|
DesignMerge Pro and PrintShop Mail are well-known,
state-of-the-art variable-data-printing solutions that are
in widespread use. New versions of both these solutions were released recently.
The big news about DesignMerge Pro is that it is now available for
Adobe InDesign! The DesignMerge Pro product was originally introduced a
number of years ago as a bundle of QuarkXTensions that make it
possible to design and produce variable-data documents from within
QuarkXPress. DesignMerge Pro has served Quark users very well — and now,
users of InDesign can also utilize this great software, because
DesignMerge Pro is now available as a bundle of InDesign Plug-Ins!
This new DesignMerge Pro offering makes it possible to design
and produce variable-data documents from within InDesign.
Note that if you buy the "DesignMerge Dual License" for $4,995.00,
you'll get both the Quark version and the InDesign version for
either Macintosh or Windows.
We also bring you major news about PrintShop Mail. A brand-new version of
PrintShop Mail (Version 6 for Windows) has been released! Perhaps
the most significant enhancement is that PrintShop Mail Version 6
does not rely on the Adobe Acrobat software for displaying PDF
documents within the PrintShop Mail environment — instead, it
makes use of the Adobe PDF Library, which is built in. Here is
a partial list of the other new features in PrintShop Mail Version 6:
support for XML data files, support for more-versatile and
more-powerful expressions (you can even create your own expressions
with Visual Basic or JavaScript), a template feature that lets you
save printer and document settings and re-use them. And one
more thing: all new PrintShop Mail packages are cross-platform
packages (that is, you can use the software on both Macintosh
and Windows computers).
