In addition to selling special-purpose solutions that generate PDF files
(e.g., variable-data-printing/publishing solutions),
Citation Software also sells general-purpose solutions for generating,
viewing, modifying, and printing PDF files.
Scroll down this page to learn about each of these products — or
read more here first to get a general overview.
Some of these solutions do server side PDF creation.
Some solutions are
off-the-shelf desktop PDF solutions and server side PDF creation solutions
that are designed for end users — each of these solutions
has a graphical user interface (GUI).
Other solutions are developers' libraries/toolkits/SDKs with APIs.
Here are brief descriptions of the PDF-creation solutions that we offer.
Note that some of these solutions run on a variety of platforms, including
AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.

Adobe PDF JobReady
|
|
|
The Adobe PDF JobReady software can help mitigate some
of the common problems that occur during the print-job-submission
process.
Adobe PDF JobReady is software that enables print providers
to develop streamlined, reliable PDF-based
and Internet-enabled workflows that begin at their customers'
desktops and extend across intranets, extranets or the
Internet to the final printing service or output device.
Support for Windows and MacOS (including MacIntel) platforms
makess it easy for end users to create and submit print-ready jobs from
any authoring application that can print.
|
Problem: File-submission errors
|
Studies show that 67% of jobs submitted to print-service
providers fail due to file-submission errors. Fonts may be
missing from the submitted job, color models can be
specified incorrectly, and graphics files can be
inadvertently omitted. When this occurs, the print-service provider
must ask that the job (or the missing components) be resubmitted.
For the print-service provider, this means added cost
and lower margin, more complexity in the job workflow,
and decreased customer satisfaction.
For the user that's submitting the job, this means
added work, increased frustration level, and a longer wait
for delivery of the completed job.
|
|
|
Problem: No job preview
|
Another common problem in the job-submission workflow is that
the user often cannot obtain an accurate job preview.
The final result may be completely different from what
is expected, due to differences between the user's software
environment and the print-service provider's software environment.
As a result, a finished job might be rejected because
"that's not what it's supposed to look like."
|
The Solution: Adobe PDF JobReady
|
Adobe PDF JobReady addresses both these problems by implementing
a secure, controlled PDF-based workflow. By using the
Adobe PDF JobReady software, a print-service
provider can ensure that all submitted jobs are complete
and that all submitted jobs are set up correctly for their
own equipment. Users can preview
jobs prior to submission, and since the preview is
device-independent PDF, the preview will be virtually identical
to the final output. And overall, job resubmissions
are drastically reduced.
|
How it works
|
Users use the Adobe PDF JobReady client to create a
PDF file simply by cliking File > Print from within
an application. The Adobe PDF JobReady client functions
like a print driver. It creates
a print-ready PDF file and then leads the user through the
process of submitting the file to the print-service provide
via the Internet or perhaps via an intranet or extranet.
Adobe PDF JobReady is packaged as a software development kit
(SDK) for integration into a print-workflow solution.
Two components
In the runtime environment, the Adobe PDF JobReady software
has two main components: the Adobe PDF JobReady client and
the Adobe PDF JobReady server.
- Adobe PDF JobReady client.
This functions as a print driver, allowing the
user to generate a PDF file by clicking
File > Print from within an application.
- AdobePDF JobReady server.
This is a set of software libraries that offer basic
JDF-reading and PDF-decryption functions.
OEMs, ISVs, or systems integrators use the Adobe PDF client-configuration
wizard to tailor the Adobe PDF JobReady client for
each customer's installation. The
configuration options include customer-branding capabilities
and PDF-file-creation parameters.
Once created, the customized Adobe PDF JobReady client
(print driver) can
be distributed through print providers to their
customers for installation onto the customers' desktops.
The Adobe PDF JobReady software comes with two
client-configuration wizards: one for Macintosh computers
and one for Windows computers.
The Adobe PDF JobReady client creates an encrypted
PDF file based on the preset PDF-file-creation parameters;
it also creates a JDF job ticket that specifies the
PDF file's characteristics.
After it creates the PDF file and the JDF job ticket,
the Adobe PDF JobReady client presents a PDF preview to the customer
and connects to the target Web application for job
ticketing and submission.
Once submission is complete, the Adobe PDF JobReady server
takes over: it decrypts the PDF file and reads the
JDF job ticket.
|
Target audience
- Quick printers
- Commercial printers
- Corporate in-house print centers
- Facilities-management companies
- OEMs and ISVs
|
Features
- One-click creation of print-ready PDF file from
any authoring application, based on print provider's
preconfigured settings
- Instant proofing of print job
- Secure delivery options, including 128-bit encryption;
unique set of encryption/decryption keys for each print provider
- Client-side creation of a Job Definition Format
(JDF) job ticket
|
Benefits to print providers
- More efficient workflow
- Increase in customer satisfaction
- Decreased in employee frustration!
- Revenue-stream protection: encryption scheme renders PDF files useless
if submitted to a different print provider
|
Benefits to end users
- Save time by simplifying
the steps needed to submit print-ready PDF
files over the Internet
- Reduce costs by previewing jobs before output,
allowing for correction of unexpected problems before
submitting file
- Take advantage of PDF's reliable structure
for print-job submission without investing in software
to generate PDF files

Jaws PDF Server
|
|
|
Jaws PDF Server is a server side PDF solution. Specifically: it is
a centralized server solution that converts
virtually any kind of document file into a high-quality PDF file.
PDF files created by Jaws PDF Server can be used with Adobe Acrobat products or with
other PDF viewers and tools.
Although (as the name implies) Jaws PDF Server runs on a server,
individual users can utilize Jaws PDF Server from their desktops.
A Jaws PDF Server module installs on a Windows desktop
or on a Macintosh desktop in the form of a
print driver, and it functions just like any other print driver.
That is: a user simply clicks on File > Print . . . .
from within any application to make a PDF file with Jaws PDF server.
|
|
|
In addition to the print-driver interface, Jaws PDF Server also has a drag-and-drop
interface and a hot-folder interface.
Features include 40-bit and 128-bit encryption,
conversion of CMYK color specifications to RGB,
a post-processing option, and much more.
Jaws PDF Server gives IT managers complete control over the
properties of the PDF files that are created, because Jaws PDF Server can be set up with different "workflows," and each
workflow can have a different set of characteristics. For example:
- You might have a workflow that creates
non-linearized
PDF files that contain
high-resolution graphics and do not
contain bookmarks or hyperlinks.
- You might have another workflow that creates
linearized PDF files
with low-resolution graphics and with bookmarks and hyperlinks.
The PDF files that are created by the first workflow might be appropriate for
printing on a high-resolution printing device, whereas the PDF files that are
created by the second workflow might be appropriate for viewing on the Web.
PDF files are fast becoming the de facto standard for corporate file sharing.
Jaws PDF Server allows workgroup
users to create and share PDF files quickly, easily, and cost-effectively.
Jaws PDF Server comes bundled with Jaws PDF Creator
and
Jaws PDF Editor; the three-product bundle is called
