Scroll down this page to learn about each of these products — or read more here first to get a general overview.

Some of these solutions do server side PDF creation.

Some solutions are off-the-shelf desktop PDF solutions and server side PDF creation solutions that are designed for end users — each of these solutions has a graphical user interface (GUI). Other solutions are developers' libraries/toolkits/SDKs with APIs.

Here are brief descriptions of the PDF creation solutions that we offer. Note that some of these solutions run on a variety of platforms, including AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.

ExpressConversion Server

ExpressConversion Server is server-based software that automatically converts files from and to many different formats, including PDF formats. ExpressConversion Server can stand alone or can be integrated seamlessly with existing workflow systems and with enterprise-level document-management applications.

If used in conjunction with Relay, a browser-based document-transformation & publishing tool, ExpressConversion Server eliminates the need to purchase, install, and maintain desktop applications for converting documents to PDF format.

Hundreds of file formats are supported, including Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Photoshop; ASCII text and ANSI text; AutoCad (DWF, DXF, DWG); CGM; HPGL; HTML; Microsoft Word (DOC, DOT, RTF, more); Microsoft Excel (XLS, XLT, more); Microsoft Publisher (PUB); Text Mail (MIME); XML/XSL; WordPerfect (WPD, WPS); Lotus (WK1, WK1, WK3, more); WML; many image formats (BMP, CUR, ICO, DIB, GIF, IMG, JPG/JPEG, more). (This is only a partial list. Click the link below for a complete list of supported file formats.)

server based PDF creation Supported file formats

It is also possible to extract document metadata in XML or CSV format.

Three rendering technologies

File rendering is performed using one of the following three rendering technologies:
  1. Integrated File Type Support. This is used to convert plain (ASCII and ANSI) text files, image files, HPGL files, MSG files, and PDF files to PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, or ZIP format. Metadata from input document is incorporated into PDF output, and metadata can be extracted in XML format or CSV format.

  2. Native Application Support. This uses the native application (the application that created the to-be-converted file) to render documents. To use this rendering technology, the native application (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, WordPerfect, etc.) must be installed on the same computer as ExpressConversion Server.

  3. Extended File Type Support. (Requires Extended Output Module, an add-on to ExpressConversion Server.) Addition of the Extended Output Module allows ExpressConversion Server to convert more than 300 file formats into PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, ZIP, DOC, RTF, HTML, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or XPS format. This method ensures the fastest rendering performance; it does not rely on native applications.

Facilitates compliance with corporate and governmental regulations

Increasing corporate and governmental regulations have led to growing demand for use of specific document formats when exchanging and archiving documents. ExpressConversion Server has special features that facilitate compliance with such regulations. For example, ExpressConversion Server can create documents in PDF/A format, which is a format that's required by many corporate and government regulators.

Features

ExpressConversion server offers the following features:
Unlimited conversions. Flexible server-based licensing model allows for unlimited document conversions on a single server. The only limits are server performance and network performance.

Hot folders/watched folders. Rapid deployment and simple integration with existing document-management systems. Loose coupling between systems increases the resilience of the overall workflow.

Command-line integration. Program start, auto stop, etc.

E-mail integration. Connect users and systems using your existing e-mail infrastructure. Users simply e-mail a file as an e-mail attachment to ExpressConversion Server — the PDF file generated by ExpressConversion Server is returned to the sender.

Web-Services integration. SOAP-compliant messaging, load balancing, job management, and reporting.

Integrated scripting support. Gain complete control over the document workflow with integrated VB and JavaScript. Execute scripts at different "event triggers" to add control logic and provide customized operations to the document-transformation and document-delivery process.

Scheduling. Days of the week, start/stop times.

Page/content scaling. Scale page size or page content to ensure compliance with enterprise requirements or regulatory requirements.

Fault monitoring and recovery. Fault Monitoring and Recovery (FMR) Windows Service monitors server performance to maximize up-time. Corrupted documents are handled gracefully so that document workflows are not interrupted.

Comprehensive file-type support. Supports over 300 input-file formats for conversion into PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, ZIP, DOC, RTF, HTML, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or XPS format.

Metadata support. Metadata from input document is incorporated into PDF output format. Metadata can be extracted from PDF file in XML format or CSV format.

XML job ticket support. Tailor each document conversion to meet the requirements of your workflow by creating an XML job ticket (an XML-based instruction file). The XML job ticket contains processing instructions for ExpressConversion Server, including:
  • source documents
  • conversion settings
  • document-delivery options
Job Ticket Templates (partial XML job tickets) contain repeatable instructions referenced from main job tickets.

PDF downgrading. Convert PDF files to the PDF 1.4 spec to comply with process requirements or regulatory requirements (e.g. FDA requires all PDFs to be at the 1.4 spec).

Hyperlinks/bookmark support. The PDF files that you create with ExpressConversion Server can contain bookmarks and hyperlinks.

Unicode font support. Support for Unicode fonts, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Document Open options. Control the opening-page appearance for PDF documents. Options include Page Only, Page and Bookmarks, Page and Thumbnails. All standard PDF views are supported, including Page Only, Thumbnail, Bookmark, and Zoom settings.

PDF Info extraction. Extract PDF Information from PDF documents into Text, XML or CSV files. The PDF Info features can support data extraction as well as document analysis. You can use the PDF Info feature to power the logic for complex document workflows. The following data types can be extracted:
  • Text (including location, size and font)
  • File Info (file size, date)
  • Page Count
  • Bookmarks
  • Hyperlinks
  • Form Fields
  • Metadata
  • XMP Metadata
  • OCR ZoneData
Text output. Extract text from images and output to *.TXT. Ideal for full-text indexing applications, for content repurposing, or for delivery to wireless devices such as a PDA. Use ExpressRecognition software to turn images into Text.

File compression. Compress PDF files by up to 80% without document degradation. Reduces cost of archiving.

Document security. Systematically apply multiple levels of security to documents, including restrictions on opening, printing, copying, editing, etc.

PDF/A output. All supported formats can be converted into PDFs that are compliant with the PDF/A standard. Validation of PDF documents is provided, to ensure that the documents comply with the PDF/A standard. Deviations from the standard are stored in an XML log to facilitate analysis and reporting.

Supported file formats.

Relay allows a user to convert almost any type of document file to PDF format. The PDF file is made available to the user through the user's Web browser; alternatively, the PDF file can be e-mailed to the user or to a collection of users.
Relay enables anyone within an enterprise to convert and publish virtually any document format, including Microsoft Office formats (Word, Excel, etc.), image formats, CAD formats, and many more formats to PDF formats and to various other formats. Because Relay works inside a browser window, the need for desktop software is eliminated; thus, Relay relieves IT administrators from the burden of installing and managing PDF-creation software on each individual desktop.

Minimal user training is required.

From simple to advanced document-conversion processes, Relay assists both basic and advanced users to generate PDF files that meet their particular requirements.

From individual business units to enterprise-wide implementations, the Relay PDF-creation solution scales effortlessly — just add additional servers if needed.

Features
Centralized server application. Reduce IT costs associated with deploying and maintaining desktop software.

Browser-based, intuitive user interface. Relay can be deployed and maintained easily because of its browser-based, platform-independent, intuitive user interface.

Scalable. It is easy to add additional servers as required to meet increasing throughput demands.

Template-based conversion choices. For example, with a single click, a user can quickly select a template for:

User-defined templates. Users can create their own templates to streamline the number of steps required to process documents. Multiple publishing settings can be combined into a single template and named appropriately. For example, a user might create a template named "Management Report" that will add a Table of Contents, a "Confidential" watermark, and page numbers.

Integration with Microsoft Outlook. Relay integrates with the user's Outlook Address Book, allowing the user to specify one or more recipients to which a published document should be delivered. No need to re-type email addresses.

Role-based templates. To simplify publishing tasks or to enforce departmental publishing standards, administrators can create templates and assign them to individual users or to groups of users.

History. Relay maintains a history of jobs that have been submitted. Users can review the status of jobs and access the files for completed jobs.

Pricing

Pricing starts at $35.00 per user (50-user minimum). Volume discounts are available. (Pricing is subject to change without notice.)

Adobe PDF JobReady

The Adobe PDF JobReady software can help mitigate some of the common problems that occur during the print-job-submission process.

Adobe PDF JobReady is software that enables print providers to develop streamlined, reliable PDF-based and Internet-enabled workflows that begin at their customers' desktops and extend across intranets, extranets or the Internet to the final printing service or output device.

Support for Windows and Mac OS (including MacIntel) platforms makes it easy for end users to create and submit print-ready jobs from any authoring application that can print.

Problem: File-submission errors

Studies show that 67% of jobs submitted to print-service providers fail due to file-submission errors. Fonts may be missing from the submitted job, color models can be specified incorrectly, and graphics files can be inadvertently omitted. When this occurs, the print-service provider must ask that the job (or the missing components) be resubmitted.

For the print-service provider, this means added cost and lower margin, more complexity in the job workflow, and decreased customer satisfaction.

For the user that's submitting the job, this means added work, increased frustration level, and a longer wait for delivery of the completed job.

RELATED PRODUCTS:

 • ExpressConversion Server

Problem: No job preview

Another common problem in the job-submission workflow is that the user often cannot obtain an accurate job preview. The final result may be completely different from what is expected, due to differences between the user's software environment and the print-service provider's software environment. As a result, a finished job might be rejected because "that's not what it's supposed to look like."

The Solution: Adobe PDF JobReady

Adobe PDF JobReady addresses both these problems by implementing a secure, controlled PDF-based workflow. By using the Adobe PDF JobReady software, a print-service provider can ensure that all submitted jobs are complete and that all submitted jobs are set up correctly for their own equipment. Users can preview jobs prior to submission, and since the preview is device-independent PDF, the preview will be virtually identical to the final output. And overall, job resubmissions are drastically reduced.

PDF file submission

How it works

Users use the Adobe PDF JobReady client to create a PDF file simply by clicking File > Print from within an application. The Adobe PDF JobReady client functions like a print driver. It creates a print-ready PDF file and then leads the user through the process of submitting the file to the print-service provide via the Internet or perhaps via an intranet or extranet.

Adobe PDF JobReady is packaged as a software development kit (SDK) for integration into a print-workflow solution.

Two components

In the runtime environment, the Adobe PDF JobReady software has two main components: the Adobe PDF JobReady client and the Adobe PDF JobReady server.
  1. Adobe PDF JobReady client. This functions as a print driver, allowing the user to generate a PDF file by clicking File > Print from within an application.

  2. AdobePDF JobReady server. This is a set of software libraries that offer basic JDF-reading and PDF-decryption functions.
OEMs, ISVs, or systems integrators use the Adobe PDF client-configuration wizard to tailor the Adobe PDF JobReady client for each customer's installation. The configuration options include company-branding capabilities and PDF-file-creation parameters. Once created, the customized Adobe PDF JobReady client (print driver) can be distributed through print providers to their customers for installation onto the customers' desktops.

The Adobe PDF JobReady software comes with two client-configuration wizards: one for Macintosh computers and one for Windows computers.

The Adobe PDF JobReady client creates an encrypted PDF file based on the preset PDF-file-creation parameters; it also creates a JDF job ticket that specifies the PDF file's characteristics.

After it creates the PDF file and the JDF job ticket, the Adobe PDF JobReady client presents a PDF preview to the customer and connects to the target Web application for job ticketing and submission.

Once submission is complete, the Adobe PDF JobReady server takes over: it decrypts the PDF file and reads the JDF job ticket.
