Adobe PDF JobReady is software that enables print providers
to develop streamlined, reliable PDF-based
and Internet-enabled workflows that begin at their customers'
desktops and extend across intranets, extranets or the
Internet to the final printing service or output device.
Users use the Adobe PDF JobReady client to create a
PDF file simply by clicking File > Print from within
an application. The Adobe PDF JobReady client functions
like a print driver. It creates
a print-ready PDF file and then leads the user through the
process of submitting the file to the print-service provide
via the Internet or perhaps via an intranet or extranet.
|
Support for Windows and MacOS (including MacIntel) platforms
makes it easy for end users to create and submit print-ready jobs from
any authoring application that can print.
Support for
MSI-based installation of client software facilitates deployment.
|
PROBLEM: File-submission errors
Studies show that 67% of jobs submitted to print-service
providers fail due to file-submission errors. Fonts might be
missing from the submitted job, color models can be
specified incorrectly, and graphics files can be
omitted inadvertently. When problems like these occur, the print-service provider
must ask that the job be resubmitted or must request the missing components.
For the print-service provider, this means added cost
and lower margin, more complexity in the job workflow,
and decreased customer satisfaction.
For the customer that's submitting the job, this means
added work, increased frustration level, and a longer wait
for delivery of the completed job.
|
PROBLEM: No job preview
Another common problem in the job-submission workflow is that
the customer often cannot obtain an accurate job preview.
Due to differences between the user's software
environment and the print-service provider's software environment,
the final result might be completely different from what
the customer expected.
As a result, a finished job might be rejected because
"that's not what it's supposed to look like."
|
THE SOLUTION: Adobe PDF JobReady
Adobe PDF JobReady addresses both these problems by implementing
a secure, controlled, PDF-based workflow. By using the
Adobe PDF JobReady software, a print-service
provider can ensure that all submitted jobs are complete
and that all submitted jobs are set up correctly for the
company's own printing equipment. Customers can preview
jobs prior to submission, and since the preview is
device-independent PDF, the preview will be virtually identical
to the final output. And overall, the requirement for job resubmissions
can be reduced drastically.
|
|

|
Adobe PDF JobReady is delivered as a software-developer's toolkit (SDK) that
can be used as the backbone for print-and-submit workflow applications.
In the runtime environment, the Adobe PDF JobReady software
has two main components: the Adobe PDF JobReady client and
the Adobe PDF JobReady server.
- Adobe PDF JobReady client.
This functions as a print driver, allowing the customer
(end user) to generate a PDF file by clicking
File > Print from within an application.
- Adobe PDF JobReady server.
This is a set of software libraries that offer basic
JDF-reading and PDF-decryption functions.
Using the Adobe PDF JobReady SDK, developers build Adobe PDF JobReady clients that
are distributed to end users as customized print drivers. As explained above,
an end user "prints" using
one of these drivers
by clicking File > Print from within an application. After the
end user selects
the Adobe PDF JobReady print driver and clicks the OK button, the
following process is initiated:
- An encrypted, print-ready PDF file is created.
- The end user can see a preview.
- The job is uploaded to the Adobe PDF JobReady server for processing.
(This server is maintained by the company that's distributing
the Adobe PDF JobReady clients to its customers.)
|
- End users enjoy one-click creation of print-ready PDF file from
any authoring application, based on print provider's
preconfigured settings. (No need to worry about joboptions files.)
- End users have instant proofing of print job.
- Secure delivery options, including 128-bit encryption;
unique set of encryption/decryption keys for each print provider.
- Client-side creation of a Job Definition Format
(JDF) job ticket.
- Support for company branding of client components.
- Support for customization of PDF properties.
- Closed-loop encryption/decryption scheme fosters customer loyalty.
The Adobe PDF JobReady server components are available
for Linux, MacOS, Solaris, and Windows Server. Both IIS and Apache Web servers
are supported.
The Adobe PDF JobReady client component is available for both Macintosh and Windows.

Wizards
To build each Adobe PDF JobReady client, a developer uses a
client-configuration
wizard to tailor the Adobe PDF JobReady client for
each customer's installation. The SDK comes with two
client-configuration wizards: one for Macintosh computers
and one for Windows computers. The wizards offer
configuration options that include company-branding capabilities
and PDF-file-creation parameters.
As explained earlier, when the end user clicks File > Print and chooses an
Adobe PDF JobReady print driver, a PDF file is created.
The properties of the PDF file are
based on the preset PDF-file-creation parameters contained in
the Adobe PDF JobReady client chosen by the end user.
A JDF job ticket is also created; it specifies the
PDF file's characteristics.
As was also explained earlier, after it creates the PDF file and the JDF job ticket,
the Adobe PDF JobReady client presents a PDF preview to the customer
and connects to the Adobe PDF JobReady server.
Once submission is complete, the Adobe PDF JobReady server
takes over: it decrypts the file and handles other tasks
required for processing the job.
Customer retention assured
Each PDF file created by an Adobe PDF JobReady client (print driver) is
encrypted in a way that renders it useless unless it is uploaded to
the appropriate Adobe PDF JobReady server. In other words: the decryption
key required for decrypting the PDF file is available only on the particular
server that is coupled with that Adobe PDF JobReady client. This closed-loop
mechanism protects your investment in the Adobe PDF JobReady technology by
ensuring that your customers rely only on your company to print the PDF files
generated by the Adobe PDF JobReady print driver you've provided. Your customers
will not be able to make use of the PDF files generated by the Adobe PDF JobReady
client you've provided without uploading the PDF files to your Adobe PDF JobReady server.

ExpressConversion Server is server-based software
that automatically converts files from and to many different
formats, including PDF formats. ExpressConversion Server can stand
alone or can be integrated seamlessly with
existing workflow systems and with
enterprise-level document-management
applications.
|
Hundreds of file formats are supported, including Adobe Illustrator;
Adobe Photoshop; ASCII text and ANSI text;
AutoCad (DWF, DXF, DWG); CGM; HPGL; HTML; Microsoft Word (DOC, DOT, RTF, more);
Microsoft Excel (XLS, XLT, more); Microsoft Publisher (PUB); Text Mail (MIME);
XML/XSL; WordPerfect (WPD, WPS); Lotus (WK1, WK1, WK3, more); WML;
many image formats (BMP, CUR, ICO, DIB, GIF, IMG, JPG/JPEG, more).
(This is only a partial list. Click the "Supported file formats" tab
for more details.)
It is also possible to extract document metadata in XML or CSV format.
|
|
Three rendering technologies
File rendering is performed using one of the following
three rendering technologies:
|
- Integrated File Type Support. This is used to
convert plain (ASCII and ANSI) text files, image files,
HPGL files, MSG files, and
PDF files to
PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, or ZIP format.
Metadata from input document is incorporated into PDF
output, and metadata can be extracted in XML format or
CSV format.
- Native Application Support. This uses the
native application
(the application that created the to-be-converted file)
to render
documents. To use this rendering technology,
the native application
(Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, WordPerfect, etc.)
must be installed on the same computer as ExpressConversion Server.
- Extended File Type Support.
(Requires Extended Output Module,
an add-on to ExpressConversion Server.)
Addition of the Extended Output Module allows
ExpressConversion
Server to convert more than 300 file formats into
PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, ZIP, DOC, RTF, HTML, JPEG,
PNG, TIFF, or XPS format.
This method ensures
the fastest rendering performance; it does not rely
on native applications.
Facilitates compliance with corporate and governmental regulations
Increasing corporate and governmental regulations have led to growing demand for use
of specific document formats when exchanging and archiving documents.
ExpressConversion Server has special features that facilitate compliance with
such regulations. For example, ExpressConversion Server can create documents in
PDF/A format, which is a format that's required by many corporate and
government regulators.
|
more >
INPUT FORMATS
ExpressConversion Server itself accepts the following
file formats as input:
|
|
• plain (ASCII and ANSI) text
• image files
• HPGL
|
|
• MSG
• PDF
|
Use of the Extended Output Module allows ExpressConversion
Server to convert many additional input formats
(more than 300 input formats in all).
|
|
|
OUTPUT FORMATS
ExpressConversion Server itself can output the following
file formats:
|
|
• PDF
• PDF/A 1b
• PDF/X
|
|
• TXT
• ZIP
|
Use of the Extended Output Module allows ExpressConversion
Server to output these additional file formats:
|
|
• DOC
• RTF
• HTML
• JPEG
|
|
• PNG
• TIFF
• XPS
|
It is also possible to generate PDF metadata
in XML format or CSV format — with or
without the Extended Output Module.
|
|
|
Add the Extended Output Module
so you can support hundreds of file formats.
|
|
|
The Extended Output Module enables
support for hundreds of input formats, and it also
enables support for the following output formats:
DOC, RTF, HTML, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and XPS
in addition to the output formats that can be generated without using the Extended Output Module:
PDF, PDF/A 1b, PDF/X, text, and ZIP.

Further automate your workflow with
ExpressPublishing Server and ExpressRecognition Server.
|
|
|
|
ExpressPublishing Server.
This automates PDF
manipulation and enhancement. A document can be assembled
from multiple documents. Tables of contents, bookmarks,
and indexes can be modified; information can be added
(page headers & footers, watermarks,
page numbers/Bates numbers, etc.); individual pages or
page ranges can be extracted. ExpressPublishing Server
can work in conjunction with ExpressConversion Server.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ExpressRecognition Server.
ExpressRecognition Server is server-based OCR software that automatically
converts images, paper documents, and faxes into editable and searchable
electronic files such as PDF files or text files. ExpressRecognition Server
can perform OCR on specific regions of a page (a process known as "Zonal OCR")
and extract the recognized data into XML files for further analysis.

FDFMerge is a command-line application
that makes it easy for a programmer to write routines that
populate form fields on a PDF form
with text, bar codes, JPEG images, TIFF images, and
individual pages from PDF files
and save the completed form on a
server.
Powered by the
Adobe PDF Library,
FDFMerge also does cropping; controls text color and justification;
controls word spacing, character spacing
and line spacing; uses bar-code fonts;
linearizes and encrypts the completed files, and much more.
Command-line interface: simple yet powerful
The command-line interface is simple yet powerful. A command-line statement can be
invoked in many different environments, with many different programming languages,
including object-oriented languages such as Java, .NET, and Visual Basic.
Sample code is available — contact us to request sample code for the
programming language you're using.
|
Adobe Acrobat not required
FDFMerge is a stand-alone application. You don't need to have Adobe Acrobat installed
to use FDFMerge.
Support for multiple platforms
FDFMerge is available for AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.
AS/400 is supported under IBM UNIX System Services for AIX.
|
To use FDFMerge, you start with a collection of PDF forms.
What is a PDF form?
A PDF form is a PDF file that contains form fields. To create a PDF form, you need a
commercial version of the Adobe Acrobat software. (The free Adobe Reader software will NOT work.)
Instructions that come with the Adobe Acrobat software tell you how to create the form fields.
Basically the procedure entails opening a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat
(typically this PDF file would contain text and graphics); then
drawing boxes with your mouse and assigning properties to the
boxes. For example, if you need form fields that will contain a phone number and
e-mail address,
you'd use Adobe Acrobat to draw two boxes, and (again using Adobe Acrobat) you could
assign the name "Phone" to one of the boxes and assign the name "Email"
to the other box.
Once you've created all your PDF forms, put them on your server.
Now write your script
You'll write a script that tells FDFMerge to grab a particular
PDF form from your server and create multiple new versions of it by inserting textual data and/or graphics
into the form fields in that PDF form. The result will be a collection of new PDF files containing
filled-in form fields.
Your script can include instructions
for using specific fonts, font sizes and colors for text; setting other typographic
properties for text (alignment, word spacing, line spacing, etc.); setting properties for
backgrounds and borders of form fields; flattening
some or all of the form fields; encrypting the new PDF files; and more.
|
- Populate PDF form fields with text, bar codes, JPEG images, TIFF images, or pages from PDF files.
- Merge pages from PDF files onto active form buttons.
- Add JavaScript to form fields.
- Linearize (optimize) for fast Web viewing.
- Encrypt output PDFs with passwords to control who can view, modify, and print them
and who can copy text & graphics from within them.
- Form flattening: remove active form fields, embedding field content
directly into the document. This can be done with all the
fields or just the fields you specify.
- Unicode support.
- Typographic control: specify font name, size, color,
character spacing, word spacing, line spacing.
- Formatting control for field borders: specify width and color.
- Formatting control for field backgrounds: specify color or transparent.
- Set the output-file version for ISO 32000 compliance (Adobe PDF Version 1.7).
- Stand-alone operation (does not rely on Adobe Acrobat).
FDFMerge is available for the following operating systems:
AIX
5.2 & above

Unlike the more-expensive
FDFMerge product,
FDFMerge Lite does not support partial form flattening,
does not have the more-sophisticated formatting features of
FDFMerge, and does not allow you to populate form fields with graphics
(though it does allow you to merge PDF pages onto active buttons).

StampPDF Batch is a server-based command-line application
for stamping text, bar codes, and images into PDF documents.
Powered by the
Adobe PDF Library,
Stamp PDF Batch is engineered for high volume, unattended and on-demand environments.
It's an ideal solution for applying pages numbers or Bate numbers,
customizing or personalizing the PDF files end-users download from your Web site,
or applying watermarks or other stamps as part of a compliance process.

|
Adobe Acrobat not required
StampPDF Batch is a stand-alone application. You don't need to have Adobe Acrobat installed
to use StampPDF Batch.
Support for multiple platforms
StampPDF Batch is available for AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.
AS/400 is supported under IBM UNIX System Services for AIX.
|
To use StampPDF Batch, you start with a collection of PDF files. Typically the PDF files
will contain text and graphics.
The PDF files do not need to contain any form fields.
Once you have all your PDF files, put them on your server.
Now write your script
You'll write a script that tells StampPDF Batch to grab a particular
PDF file from your server and create multiple new versions of it by adding
text, graphics, and bar codes in specified locations on some or all of the pages. The result will
be a collection of new PDF files containing the text, graphics, and bar codes
added by StampPDF Batch.
Your script can
include typographic specifications (fonts, font sizes, colors); it can also specify line breaks,
transparency levels, and rotation angles for text; it can also include instructions
for encrypting each new PDF file. Many other options are available as well.
