This page contains information about programmer's libraries/toolkits
that allow a programmer to handle the following tasks dynamically:
- use a password to encrypt existing PDF documents
- use a password to decrypt existing PDF documents
- use a password to create new encrypted PDF documents
- sign PDF documents electronically to assure their authenticity.
Note that many of these libraries/toolkits run on a variety of platforms, including
AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows NT/2000/XP.
By integrating these libraries/toolkits with our
server-based PDF-merging/stamping/form-filling solutions,
you can build an automated, production-quality variable-data-publishing system
that generates secured documents!
Encryption
The libraries/toolkits described here support standard
Adobe Acrobat security technology, which allows you to
create a PDF file that requires a password
to do high-resolution printing OR to do any printing OR
to modify text and graphics OR to select text and graphics OR
to add or change notes and form fields OR to fill or sign
form fields OR to use accessibility options
OR to do document assembly.
When using one of the software products described here to
apply encryption to a PDF file, you specify a
password (or, depending on which encryption parameters you're
using, you might need to specify two different passwords:
an "owner password" and a "user password").
You also specify which of the tasks listed above should
be restricted.
Then, when you make the encrypted PDF file available to others,
you only give the required password(s) to people that should be
allowed to perform the restricted tasks that you specified
when you encrypted the file. Or, if
you want to secure your PDF file so that nobody can
perform the restricted tasks, you simply
keep the password(s) to yourself.
Decryption
If you know the owner password that
was used when encryption was applied to a particular PDF file,
you can use one of the solutions described here to decrypt the
file. Decrypting it removes the password protection.
