QUESTION: What is VPS?

ANSWER: VPS stands for "Variable Print Specification." VPS is a PostScript-based language for describing full-color variable-data-printing jobs. The VPS language was invented by Scitex Corporation Ltd. and is now maintained by Scitex's affiliate Creo, Inc., a global company with key strengths in imaging and software technology.

A guiding principle of VPS is its ability to specify which elements of a variable-data print job will be repeated from page to page. This allows variable-data print jobs to print at or near rated speed on a printer or digital press with a RIP that is capable of understanding VPS, because it is possible to reduce or eliminate the need to download the same data to the printer or digital press and RIP it multiple times during the same print job. Because VPS enables speedy printing, it is known as a "print-optimization technology."

Producer and consumer

To use VPS in your variable-data-printing workflow, you need a VPS producer and a VPS consumer. A VPS producer is a variable-data-printing application that can generate output in VPS format, and a VPS consumer is a printer or digital press with a RIP that can understand the VPS code generated by your VPS producer.

VPS producers

Quite a few of the leading variable-data-printing/publishing solutions are capable of generating VPS output. Among them are:
  • Creo's own Darwin Desktop, which is a QuarkXPress Xtension that allows you to design and produce variable-data documents from within QuarkXPress

  • Atlas Software's PrintShop Mail, which is a standalone application that makes it easy to use PDF files as boilerplate documents

  • Meadows Publishing Solutions' DesignMerge Pro, which is a QuarkXPress Xtension that allows you to design and produce variable-data documents from within QuarkXPress.

  • Document Sciences' Autograph, which is a sophisticated suite of software products for producing variable-data documents

  • Elixir Technologies' Opus, which is a very powerful document-composition system that's idea for doing high-volume production, finishing, and mailing of customized business documents in black & white and full color.

  • Pageflex's Persona and Mpower products, which are very powerful, nicely designed, easy-to-use variable-data-publishing solutions

  • PrintSoft's PReS, which is another powerful software solution for creating variable-data documents

  • XMPie's PersonalEffect, which is a modular software suite for creating variable-data documents
