Appligent releases "APCrypt" for PDF security

AUGUST 5, 2002Appligent, Inc. has announced its new, economical, server-based "APCrypt" application. APCrypt makes it easy for you to apply standard Acrobat Encryption to PDF documents dynamically.

As a command-line application, APCrypt can be integrated easily into new or existing PDF solutions. It has been created to handle all your standard PDF-encryption needs and can handle high-volume, on-demand security reliably, in an unattended environment.

Along with applying encryption settings, APCrypt can also decrypt your encrypted PDF files. This enables you to make dynamic changes to previously encrypted documents or to apply new encryption settings. The decryption feature eliminates the need to have unsecured copies of your PDF documents residing on a public server.

Supports Two Encryption Levels

You can either encrypt your PDF documents with the standard 40-bit strength, or you can increase a document's cryptographic strength by using Acrobat 5.0 128-bit security. Using the 128-bit encryption method also allows you to add four additional document-level user permissions.

Supports All Standard Acrobat Security Features
40-bit encryption level permissions:
  • Do not allow printing
  • Do not allow modifying the document
  • Do not allow selecting text and graphics
  • Do not allow adding or changing notes and form fields.
128-bit encryption level permissions:
  • Do not allow fill or sign of form fields
  • Do not allow accessibility
  • Do not allow document assembly
  • Do not allow high-resolution printing.

Set an owner or user password
  • User password: set a user password to open a document
  • Owner password: set an owner password to change permissions and passwords

Decryption: remove existing security settings

This feature enables you to remove encryption settings from your documents dynamically, which means you can make changes to your files and/or apply new encryption settings. (An owner password is required to decrypt documents.)

Platforms supported

The current version of APCrypt supports Windows NT/2000, Mac OS X, AIX, and Red Hat Linux 7.x. Future versions will support Solaris 7 & 8 and HP-UX.

Pricing

The list price for APCrypt is $495.00 USD.

The Mac OS X version of APCrypt is available at a special reduced price of $371.25 USD until September 30, 2002.
