Simon & Schuster saves money with Melissa's
"CLEAN Address for Oracle Data"

SEPTEMBER 20, 2002 — Bad data was
costing Simon & Schuster thousands of dollars
a week in shipping and returns fees. By
implementing server-side data hygiene from
Melissa Data, the publisher has been able to
reduce the cost of sending review copies of
books to editors and producers by $8,000.00
to $10,000.00 per month. This initial savings of nearly
50% per month since April 2002 is expected to
climb to 70% by the end of the year.
"CLEAN Address catches ZIP Code errors,
detects duplicates, and reduces delivery time
for the thousands of packages we send each
week to reviewers," said John Soldano, systems analyst for Simon & Schuster.
Prior to using CLEAN Address, errors would be
discovered and corrected in the field by
UPS agents and billed individually to the
shipper. External address correction was costing
Simon & Schuster up to $250,000.00 per year.
The publicity departments of Simon & Schuster
are responsible for delivering as many as
8,000 book packages each week to journalists, radio and television
producers, and other reviewers. Depending upon the market for
a particular book, a publicist creates a customized list of reviewers
pulled from an Oracle database of more than
100,000 contact records. The list is then passed
through address correction prior to fulfillment.
"The benefit of batch processing using
CLEAN Address is that it's all automated. We can verify
addresses and append ZIP+4 Codes and other information without having
to export any data," said Soldano. "After the
success of applying CLEAN Address to our
publicity mailings, we expect to expand this
essential function to the delivery of orders to our retail and
wholesale account base."
CLEAN Address is a developers' component for address cleansing that
was designed for Oracle database applications
and can be integrated easily into applications
running on the Web, Oracle Forms, PL/SQL, C++,
Visual Basic, or Java.
