Free PPML viewer available from Xeikon (converts PPML to PostScript)
|
JULY 16, 2003 — Xeikon International has developed a Windows software tool to help
PPML producers with their programming. This software tool, which is called the
"Xeikon PPML Viewer Version 1.11" and is also known as "PPML2PS,"
converts a PPML file to PostScript format. You can then print the document(s)
described in the PPML code by
sending the PostScript file to a PostScript
device, or you can convert the PostScript to PDF format (by using Adobe Acrobat Distiller, for example)
and then view the document on screen.
The
Xeikon PPML Viewer is based on Xeikon's IntelliStream digital front-end technology.
Optimized PostScript
If the PPML data contains the required re-use information, the
Xeikon PPML Viewer generates PostScript code that is optimized, or flattened,
meaning that recurring information is consolidated into just one occurrence
within the PostScript code.
Thus, the PostScript file should print at or near rated speed on a PostScript printer
or digital press.
Reference implementation
The Xeikon PPML Viewer has been chosen by PODi
as the official PPML reference implementation.
Imposition supported
The Xeikon PPML Viewer will perform imposition if imposition code
is included in the PPML file that is being converted.
Supports PPML version 2.1 specification (with some exceptions)
The Xeikon PPML Viewer supports the PPML version 2.1 specification, with these exceptions:
- EXTERNAL_DATA_ARRAY
- SEGMENT_ARRAY
- TICKET features
- Enhanced REPEAT functionality introduced in PPML 1.5.
The following content data formats are supported:
- image/tiff
- image/jpeg
- application/PostScript.
The PDF content data format is not supported in this version of the Xeikon PPML Viewer,
solely because it is a free tool and Xeikon International is not aware of any free tools
to process PDF content.
In addition to accepting a PPML file as input, the Xeikon PPML Viewer can accept
a zip file that contains a PPML file in the zip root.
How you use the Xeikon PPML Viewer
To use the Xeikon PPML Viewer, you just open it on your Windows desktop and drag
a PPML file (or a zip file with a PPML file in its root) onto it.
The Xeikon PPML Viewer can be downloaded free of charge from the
Xeikon Web site.
